Changing habits and starting to eat healthier and more consciously is usually one of the main New Year’s resolutions. In addition, we often come across terms such as zero Km, ecological, organic, biological… Four different concepts that can sometimes lead us to confusion. Therefore, today we dedicate the first post of 2022 on nutrition and health to explain what the differences are and how to distinguish them.

Zero km food

Zero km food are local products (their origin is less than 100 km from the distribution point). In this way, the production, consumption and development of local products are favored; thus the local economy develops.

In addition, they are seasonal products and their production and transport has a much lower environmental impact. Since they are seasonal products, they are at their best moment of maturity, flavor and concentration of nutrients!

Being zero kilometer products does not mean that they are ecological, biological or organic products.

Ecological food

Ecological are those foods (fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, eggs …) that have been produced respecting the environment in several aspects:

  • In its agricultural production, chemical fertilizers or pesticides are not used and are replaced by other natural ones or biopesticides (which come from or are made of living beings or substances that we can find in nature, such as sulfur).
  • Respect of natural cycles (for example, there is no tomato in winter).
  • The animals eat products of ecological origin and they are respected as much as possible until the time of slaughter.

Organic foods

They are those foods that have been grown without chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or synthetic drugs.

Biological foods

Those foods that do not contain any genetically altered component.

How to distinguish them

In order to classify a food as eco, biological or organic, they must demonstrate that they meet a series of requirements.

For consumers to be able to recognize them, they must bear the seals (of the EU or Spain, for example) that certify that they meet these requirements.

Finally, remember that the fact that a food is organic does not mean that it is healthy!
