Along with the salads, of which we already talked about a couple of weeks ago, fruit is another key ingredient for a healthy summer. However, some of them are weighed down by myths that make some people afraid of them and stop consuming certain typical summer fruits despite how tasty they are!
For this reason, today we dedicate the second post of the healthy summer series to debunking two of the most widespread myths about summer fruits, related to melons and cherries.
Myths about melon and cherries
Myth 1: Eat melon at night…
One of the most widespread myths in the world of fruit is that “eating melon at night is bad”. However, the truth is that the melon, like any other fruit, can be eaten at night without any problem, it neither makes us fat nor “kills” us.
What can happen if you eat melon at night?
- On the one hand, it provides a lot of water, so it makes you get up a lot at night to go urinate,
- on the other hand, since it is usually a very tasty fruit, people usually eat a “big portion” of it and it may not feel so good to us;
- however, in general, not.hing happens. You just eat fruit, which is always good! (except for certain intolerances)
Myth 2: Are cherries fattening?
How delicious the cherries are and, in addition, they are at their best moment!
«But I can’t eat them because they get fat…» It is not true! They can be eaten, like any other fruit, taking care of the quantity (since, as with the melon, the problem is usually the quantity, and in the case of the cherry, it is very easy to go overboard).
Hey provide us with a lot of vitamin A and C, they are very rich in antioxidants and have a lot of fiber in the form of pectin, so they help control cholesterol and triglyceride levels, as well as combat constipation.
In addition, and as a curiosity, they provide us with acetylsalicylic acid (natural aspirin) so it helps us in processes that cause pain, such as osteoarthritis, and melatonin (helps regulate sleep cycles).
Myth 3: cherries and water
It is also a myth that you cannot drink water after eating cherries. You can, just be careful if you have eaten too many cherries (once again, the quantity).
Ideas with melon and cherries
To finish, I will give you a couple of delicious ideas to enjoy these summer fruits in a different way, combining their properties with those of oily fish.
For example, instead of the typical melon with ham, you can eat melon with pickled tuna, an original and very healthy mix.
You can also make delicious fruit salads. For example, make a green salad with cherries, anchovies and yogurt.
Happy and healthy month of July!
