After talking about salads and hydration and debunking myths about some summer fruits, today we dedicate our Nutrition and Health post to two other topics of summer: digestion cut and skin protection (specifically we will focus on Melanin-stimulating foods).

Digestion cut

Actually, the misnamed “digestion cut” is a hydrocution, the result of a sudden change in body temperature, from being very hot to the “cold” water, when you make a sudden immersion.

Because of this rapid change in temperature, a sudden vasoconstriction produces syncope with a sensation of nausea, vomiting, loss of consciousness and can even cause death!

To avoid this, it is important to get into the water little by little (especially if you have been in the sun for a few hours or if it is just after meals, among others).

Melanin-stimulating foods

Melanin is the natural pigment of melanocytes, present in skin cells, which gives color to the skin, hair, etc. and that, in addition, helps us protect the skin from the sun’s rays.

There are certain foods that can contribute to the production of melanin: those rich in carotenoids (beta-carotene) and vitamin C. Specifically, they are present in orange and dark green foods such as:

  • Carrots (this food is very popular in this group)
  • Apricots
  • Mango
  • Cantaloupe Melon
  • Papaya
  • Loquats
  • Sweet potato
  • Pumpkin
  • Spinach
  • Lettuce
  • Chard
  • Tomato

Important: even if you eat many foods of this type, you should always give yourself cream with sun protection, throughout the day, especially in the summer, avoid taking in the sun’s rays at noon, and apply all the guidelines that health professionals (especially dermatologists) advise us. Sun cream with high protection, ALWAYS!

Happy and healthy August!
