As in the month of January, September is usually a month full of beginnings and good resolutions. Among others, it may be the ideal time to reorder the fridge. Placing food in the right place is more important than it seems, not only for a matter of finding what we need easily, but also to keep it in good condition for as long as possible. Therefore, the key is to organize the food we put in the fridge taking into account the temperature they need.

  • In the coldest area of the fridge, which is usually the one closest to the freezer, although it varies according to the type of fridge, meat and fish are placed; that is, those foods that spoil before.
  • Regarding fruits and vegetables, today refrigerators generally come with drawers that indicate where to place this type of product. You have to be careful, because too much cold can cause them to deteriorate. Also, remember that there are fruits and vegetables that it is better not to put in the fridge, such as potatoes, garlic, onions, sweet potatoes, cucumber, avocado, banana, pineapple… Finally, you have to place the fruits separately from the vegetables, because some fruits (bananas, pears, apples, mango, pineapple …) emit ethylene, which can make the rest of fruits and vegetables sensitive to it ripen and spoil before.
  • In the central area of the fridge, place those foods that are cooked and those open containers that indicate that “once opened, keep in the fridge”.
  • On top or further away from the freezer, you can put those foods that need less cold such as dairy (yogurt, cheese …), sausages, eggs… It is usual to place the latter on the door, but it is not recommended, since when opening and closing it, we subject them to changes in temperatures that are not good for their conservation. ¡Be careful!
  • Finally, food that does not need too much cold is stored at the door: canning jars, bricks, butter, jam, sauces, drinks…

I hope these suggestions are helpful to you to organize your fridge, Cheers to all!

How to store open cans?

What do we do with canned fish from Serrats when they are not completely consumed once opened?

The first thing we have learned from Arantza’s advice is that you have to keep them in the central area of the fridge. They can be kept cold for a few days; but it is important to follow these recommendations so that they perfectly keep all their characteristics and flavor:

  • Keep them in their own glass jar, closed and covered with oil on top.
  • If it is a can, it is advisable to transfer it to a container that can be closed, and covered with oil. (the one in the can or another good one).
